Popcorn can be a healthy snack at Thanksgiving.

One of the most popular ways to enjoy popcorn is as a snack while watching our favorite football teams battle it out. Most enjoy this snack lightly salted, maybe with butter on it. Some even take their favorite gourmet popcorn recipe and may a large bowl or two of it.

Popcorn can be a healthy alternative to other snacks. The healthiest way to enjoy popcorn is by popping it in an air popper with a light spray of a butter flavored oil. Another is by using a hand crank popper with a minimal amount of popping oil and lightly salting the popcorn after its popped. There are many different flavors of popcorn seasonings available to flavor our favorite snack.

To keep popcorn healthy during the holidays you just need to keep it simple and don’t load the popcorn up with chocolate or other heavy, sugared coatings.

October is National Popcorn Month. What does that mean for us? Not much. We don’t get a day off of work and schools are not closed down for the day either. We just get a day to celebrate the history of Popcorn. 

There are many ways to do this. We can make Gourmet popcorn and give it to our friends.   We could email our favorite gourmet popcorn recipes too. We could wait until the end of the month and hand out home made popcorn balls instaed of store bought candy.

Which ever way you choose to celebrate popcorn month is fine by me. I just take it with another grain of popcorn salt and use it as a chance to make up a big batch of popcorn in my favorite  Hand crank popper!

Theater Style popcorn Popper!

I finally broke down and bought a theater style popcorn cart. This is a smaller version of the popcorn poppers that you see in movie theaters and that popcorn vendors use. It’s a old fashion looking popper on wheels.

This popper can even be used on counter tops. It comes apart from the wheels by pulling two pins out.

It could be used for parties, church functions or even setting it up at a local flea market and selling popcorn from it. I may set it up and do just that.

It has a 4 ounce capacity. It’s smaller than I like but it makes good popcorn. So I guess it will do. The popcorn is just like at the movies too. You can use any types of popcorn in it from loose bagged popcorn to all inclusive popcorn kits. The kits work out great because everything is included in one bag. You get the kernels, oil and salt all mixed together.

I think you could even use the  glazes to make  gourmet popcorn. You could make cinnamon, chocolate, blueberry, caramel corn and more.  With all of the new popcorn seasonings you have an almost unlimited supply of different flavors to make and try.
If you have the room this may be something you want to get. Whats better than your own theater style popcorn right at home with a good movie or two.

Colored Popcorn Kernels

Colored popcorn gets it’s color naturally!

It’s not dyed or painted or stained.

It’s grown that way from seed. The color is determined by the parent seed color. One of the ways to change the seed color without genetically altering it is by pollination. All corn is pollinated by the wind. To keep the colors true you keep any other corn fields separated from the others.

Colored popcorn kernels come in a variety of colors. You can get colored popcorn in Reds, Yellows, White, Blues, Purples and even rainbow. The rainbow seed can be a mix of all the other colors or it could be a strain of popcorn that produces different colors in the cobs. The only color I know that you can’t find is green. After checking with various vendors and popcorn suppliers, I found out that there is not a green popcorn.

Colored popcorn pops out in white. This is due to the small explosion that happens inside of the kernels when the moisture inside is heated causing the hull to burst. This causes the popcorn kernel to turn inside out.

Colored popcorn works the same in gourmet popcorn recipes and in any popcorn popper you use including microwave popcorn poppers.

Pop-O-Pot

I recently learned of a great trick for using the Pop-O-Pot microwave popcorn popper. The fine folks at LAARSEN ASSOCIATES told me about this great method to use in the Pop-O-Pot.

It is the way you prep the oil before adding the popcorn kernels and putting it in the microwave for popping.

Instead of the 2 tablespoons of oil, you use 1 tablespoon of butter and 1 tablespoon of oil. Mix the two together in the Pop-O-Pot and microwave for 1 minute. This allows the two to blend and preheats the Pop-O-Pot. Add the 1/3 to 1/2 cup of you favorite popcorn kernels and microwave on the highest setting until the popping stops.

Remove the popcorn from the popper to a large bowl and salt to taste. If you use a good quality buttery popcorn salt, you will have some of the best tasting popcorn ever.

You can add salt to the Pop-O-Pot before popping, but I prefer to add it after its done popping. It keeps the popcorn tender and you can control the amount of salt added to the popcorn.
